Support: Where Soldiers Come From

On 4th of July weekend, Rooftop Films will host a screening of Heather Courtney’s powerful documentary Where Soldiers Come From, about three young friends from Michigan who sign up with the National Guard and serve in Afghanistan, returning as changed people. The film never treats their actions with melodrama: they sign up because they believe in the cause, because the military provides a possible way of life, and because they are friends. They way they serve is almost quotidian; the poignancy of the action is how tragically normal it seems for young men to be fighting and suffering and dying like this. Although these soldiers have incredible resilience, witnessing in this film what our country’s wars are doing to our citizenry left me with an overall sense of hopelessness that made me cry and cry.

Filmmaker Heather Courtney is working to chip away at that hopelessness. At the Rooftop screening, and at other screenings, Heather will be working with veterans organizations to offer direct action for citizens and support for veterans. But in order to get the film onto the roof and out into the world, Heather and her team need your support.

Please donate to their United States Artists Fund campaign.

And come see Where Soldiers Came From at Rooftop Films on July 2.
