Epix Presents A Sweet Night of “Caramel” at Socrates Sculpture Park

Caramel is a beige-brown confection made by heating sugars. Caramel is the stuff of your favorite candies and crèmes. By its very nature, caramel cannot be taken in and chewed on lightly; it has to be worked on and savored slowly.

In some places, caramel isn’t just for eating. It goes on the skin — it’s something to be felt. For example, in the city of Beirut, caramel is used to remove hair from the body. Caramel is a little bit of pain and a communal laugh at the efforts made for the sake of beauty. Caramel is what brings women together for the sweet, messy, dark, soft, dense, and intense stuff of life. Caramel is emotional experience that gets stuck on the roof of the mouth, on the tips of the fingers, and lingers…

The Lebanese film, “Caramel” follows the lives and loves of five women whose paths criss-cross in and around a beauty parlor. Instead of showcasing a disrupted, war-ravaged Beirut, director Nadine Labaki presents the spaces of Beirut that provide a continuity of warmth and refuge, the spaces wherein women are invited to deal with universal issues of friendship, romance, tradition, and sexuality. It’s no surprise that after its premiere at Cannes, Caramel went on to become a hit international comedy in over 40 countries – it just sticks with people. And now, EPIX Movie Free-For-All brings the film to Socrates Sculpture Park, Long Island City, for a special outdoor screening on July 20th.

In conjunction with Verizon Fios, Epix has expanded to a series of 32 free, outdoor movie screenings in four parks in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. Socrates Sculpture Park screenings will continue every Wednesday night through the end of August, with contemporary international and art films like “The Good, The Bad, The Weird”, “The Straight Story”, and “Biutiful”. Every event will also open with live music at 7pm so be sure to come early. And the sweetest part of all – it’s completely for free.
