Starring Rutina Wesley of True Blood fame, How She Move tells the story of Raya, a motivated student, whose dream of being a doctor is put on hold after a family tragedy. Forced to leave her private school and return to her dead end neighborhood, Raya enters an elite step competition to pay for her tuition. The familiar plot takes a backseat to fantastic dance sequences in this energetic movie produced in part by MTV Films, whose soundtrack thumps to the beats of Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes and Montell Jordan. Just like weeks past, a Rooftop short will be screened prior to the headlining film. This week we’ll be screening A Man Named Magick; a great short by Joaquin Perez and Robert Hatch-Miller about Magick Balay, who runs a midtown Manhattan magic shop by day, and at night performs his own legerdemain at clubs and private parties. The film is a close-up portrait of a charismatic guy whose greatest feat is how he has transformed himself through his art.
