Based on the novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games depicts the futuristic dystopian society of Panem, in which twenty-four young boys and girls compete to the death for everlasting fame and a surplus of food rations for the year – a governmental attempt to suppress the people through intimidation and fear. Katniss Everdeen must fight for her life against highly-trained tributes if she ever wants to return to her mother and sister in District 12, though things get more complicated when she forges unlikely friendships with her fellow competitors. The Hunger Games stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks and Woody Harrelson.
