Ep 193: Jessica Green • Gavin Smith • Sally Berger

[powerpress]

Filmwax Radio takes a look at film programming in New York City with three of the best. Jessica Green has been the Director of the Maysles Cinema for some 6 years. Gavin Smith is the editor of Film Comment magazine and led the programming for the series, Film Comment Selects, which will have its 14th season beginning February 17th; and Sally Berger is the  main programmer for Doc Fortnight at MoMA which runs from February 14th through the 28th.

There are two Filmwax events coming up that are mentioned during the course of the show. The first is Filmwax’s first screening event with BRIC Arts Media in Downtown Brooklyn on Tuesday, February 18th, 7PM. We will be screening the Oscar-nominated celebrated documentary Cutie and the Boxer. Afterward we’ll have a Q&A with filmmaker Zachary Heinzerling (Episodes 104154) and the film’s subject Ushio & Noriko Shinohara (Episode 154). The event, a co-presentation between BRIC & Filmwax, will be moderated by myself. This event is free and open to the public. Details may be found here.

The other event is the latest screening in my Docularious! series up at the Maysles Cinema. We’ll be screening Trish Dalton & Elisabeth Sperling’s (Episode 100) highly entertaining film One Night Stand. Filmwax showed the film in its rough cut phase some years ago. It has since had many screenings including a theatrical at the Quad last year. The screening will take place this Saturday, February 22nd, 7:30 PM. Not only will I be there to moderate but both Trish and Elisabeth will be present as will one of the composers from the film, Robin Goldwasser.  Al Maysles (Episode 180) will also be present.  Tickets and more details may be found here. The podcast concludes with the song Animal Crackers in My Soup sung by Shirley Temple who passed away this week at the age of 85.
