Ep 202: Onur Tukel returns

[powerpress]

Onur Tukel, director of Richard’s Wedding and Summer of Blood, loves post-screening Q&A sessions. “I’m into being challenged,” he says. “If I can defend the movie or if I agree with them about, to them, what doesn’t work, that’s exciting to me.”

What’s exciting to me is that the North Carolina-bred, Brooklyn-based filmmaker, actor and artist joined me for this episode of Filmwax Radio. A few years back, Onur made his fourth feature, Richard’s Wedding, which stars Jenniifer Prediger (Uncle Kent, Red Flag), Lawrence Michael Levine (Gabi on the Roof in July, V/H/S) and yours truly in my film debut. Richard’s Wedding premiered at the Sarasota Film Festival in 2012 to great acclaim and has enjoyed much exposure since, thanks to its distributor, Factory 25.

The timing of Onur’s fourth visit to the podcast couldn’t be better as that latest film of his, a lo-budge vampire comedy called Summer of Blood, is about to have its world premiere at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. Influenced by such exploitation luminaries as Roger Corman and Lloyd Kaufman, Onur’s movie seizes the whole Brooklyn indie post-mumblecore zeitgeist and runs with it.
