From the BK Streets to the Tribeca Film Fest, Five Star Hits Home

Rooftop is thrilled to co-present Five Star, director Keith Miller’s second feature film, alongside Tribeca Film at their upcoming annual festival. Keith is a familiar face within the Rooftop Films community–not only did we screen his debut feature, Welcome to Pine Hill, in our 2012 Summer Series, and his short film Prince/William in our 2010 Summer Series, from which Five Star is based, but we proudly gifted Five Star our Rooftop Films Equipment Grant at last year’s Summer Series as part of our Rooftop Filmmakers’ Fund Grants.

Five Star explores what it means to be a man growing up on the streets of New York. After a stray bullet kills John’s father, Primo, an East New York Bloods gang member and John’s father’s protégé, takes John under his wing. Under the stifling summer heat, as Primo schools John in how to become a proper gang member, both men question if gang participation will allow them to be the better men they aspire to be. It intentionally and evocatively blurs the line between fiction and reality by exploring the actors’ real-life gang relations.

Be sure to catch one of Five Star’s four screenings during the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival! The film premieres on Thursday, April 17th, at 9pm at Bow Tie Cinemas Chelsea 7 followed by screenings on Friday, April 18th, at 8:30pm at AMC Loews Village 7 -3; on Monday, April 21st, at 8:30pm at Bow Tie Cinemas Chelsea 4; and on Saturday, April 26th, at 2:30pm at Bow Tie Cinemas Chelsea 4.
