On December 1st, our friendly neighborhood sponsors, Kiehl's Since 1851, are having a party at their cozy Flagship store to kick off the holidays and so they invited Rooftop Films to show some short, festive, seasonally appropriate films about all sorts of wintery things: a child comes to New York and sees his first snowfall; an experimental filmmaker captures his son's kinetic first sleigh ride; a sullen septuagenarian finds a moment of solace as she sneaks away from a holiday dinner; an innocent secret santa is accused of seducing an officemate with sneaky gifts; and a crew of chilly pirates and monkeys sail south to warmer waters.
The movies run for about 45 minutes and after that you can grab some complimentary food and drink, pick up some awesome free Kiehl's samples, and get a head start on your holiday shopping. If you came to a Rooftop show this summer you probably received a bag of Kiehl's samples, and if you are anything like us you are dying to get your hands on some more of their sweet, soothing stuff. So come on out for the films, the snacks, the drinks, and the pineapple papaya facial scrub! All of them will make you a little happier as you contemplate the chilly days ahead.
The Films:
The Kings of Christmas
(David Katz / New York, NY / 10:27)
The flashy yet underground outer borough phenomenon of elaborate, ornate Christmas exterior house decorations is given a human face in this documentary short. You'll meet the obsessed, quirky people behind the biggest, brightest, and most over-the-top holiday decorated houses in New York City, including Steve Pancini who owns 600 animated dolls for his lawn and takes an entire month off from work to maintain his display.
Return I Will to Old Brazil
(Alex Budovsky, 4:00)
A mellow and fun flash animation starring a boatload of pirate monkeys traveling from snowy northern seas to the Caribbean.
If only we all got to sail south for the winter. Directed by Russia's top pop animator, Alex Budkovsky.
Maximilian‘s Wild Ride (Joe Moreau, 1:00)
An electric first sleigh ride for Max, animated and edited by his Dad Joe.
Secret Santa (Alan Harris, 3:00)
Good will during the holiday season is always appreciated, or is it? A kooky comedy about Christmas office traditions gone wrong.
Storyboard of My Life: Coming To New York (Robert Castillo, 3:00)
Professional storyboard artist Robert Castillo tells the story of his life in clips of sped up video that capture his drawing process. In this chapter he tells of first meeting his mother and father in Queens at the age of 7 after having been raised by his Grandmother in the Dominican Republic. Robert travels by plane to New York for the holidays and sees his first snow, fights with his new brother and tries to adjust to his new surroundings.
Roberta Wells (Kat Candler, 8:00)
A subtle and sweet neo-realistic drama about an old woman being phased out of her Holiday family dinner. With everyone either ignoring her or trying to help her, she struggles to be herself, but finally she gets a chance to relax with a grandson away from the dinner table.
Vermont Five Town Massive Friday, December 30th
7:00-Midnight
Holley Hall on Main Street
Bristol, Vermont
$7.00
Our good buddy and Technical Manager, Joe Shafer, is one of the Bristol luminaries putting together an awesome event to help close out the old year. For the last 6 years he and his crew, 9:37 Productions, have put together a big end-of-the-year bash in their hometown. This year the show will be even more amazing than ever. More than 25 featured artists will fill Bristol's Holley Hall with art, music, poetry and a program of films made up of work by local filmmakers and selections from Rooftop's 2005 Summer Series, including films by Starksboro animator Ethan Clarke and Monkton native Graham Huber.
New Haven's own singer/songwriter Anais Mitchell will headline this year's show. She has been out on the road performing songs from her album Hymns for the Exiled, appearing on Austin City Limits and winning the Kerrville Folk Fest's New Folk Award. The music doesn't end there, as local hip-hop heroes, The G One Three Crew, will be performing hits from their debut album The Way. The experimental rock trio Purgatory Chasm Brother, will be wrapping up the night with their unique rock and roll sound.
The evening will open with a gallery exhibition featuring visual work from area artists, most notably Randolph photographer Mikael Kennedy, and the whole show will be bound together by Vermont slam poet champion Geoff Hewitt who will be hosting the show this year.
Films include:
THERE'S A FLOWER IN MY PEDAL (ANDREA DORFMAN / HALIFAX, NOVIA SCOTIA / 4:00)
A lovely mixed-media ode to the peaceful act of riding a bicycle.
OH MY GOD! (JOHN BRYANT / AUSTIN, TX / 10:00)
A playful satire about the execution of the developmentally disabled in Texas.
KIEST PARK (JOHN AYALA / HOUSTON, TX / 5:00)
Riding his dirt bike, a seven-year-old leaves his parents and his block for the first time to explore, observe and destroy in a vast new world.
WESTLESS AMERICAN (ERIK NELSON | U.S. NATIONAL PARKS | 5:05)
An exhilarating document of one nature nut's manic shirtless sprint through all the great National Parks of North America.
RETURN I WILL TO OLD BRAZIL (ALEXSEY BUDOVSKY | ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA | 4:00)
A mellow and fun flash animation starring a boatload of pirate monkeys, from Russia's top pop animator in exile.
BATHTIME IN CLERKENWELL (ALEKSEY BUDKOVSKY, ROOFTOP 7/23/04)
An irresistible music video for an infectious song by (The Real) Tuesday Weld. Black and white birds shoot out of cuckoo clocks and spread into the town of Clerkenwell, angering sleeping residents, cuckoo kings and cops to the bouncy rhythm of a chopped up old groove.
CRAZY EYES DOLPHIN VS THE MAD COWS (IAN STEWART / PROVIDENCE, RI / 5:40)
A sobering animated expose about how Mad Cow Disease is now killing dolphins. Via karate.
