Support Reel Works Teen Filmmaking Labs

Reel Works is one of the finest youth media training programs in the country. Having worked in youth media, at Rooftop and elsewhere, and seeing many youth-produced films every year, I can say hands down that their intensive Lab programs create some of the best films made by teenagers you’ll ever see–we’ve shown a few at Rooftop. On top of that, Reel Works provides a strong community for New York City teens, as proven by the fact that a committee of their young graduates has started a fundraising campaign so that other students can receive the same opportunity they did–for FREE!

If you think that’s as wonderful and heartwarming and important as I do, please support Reel Works on IndieGoGo.

They wrote:
REEL WORKS is a family, a home away from home. It’s a safe place where we learned how to express ourselves and achieve our goals. It’s a place of mentoring and caring where we found our voices and became filmmakers.

Please help us give that gift to other teens by supporting our campaign to help keep the Reel Works Summer Lab open and free for NYC teens.

THE SUMMER LAB
With your help, Reel Works will recruit 12 teens from schools across NYC for an intensive, four week writing and filmmaking workshop this summer. Students work with a writing mentor to create original spoken-word poetry and then turn their poems into original short films. Along the way, they will learn literacy, teamwork, self-expression and be transformed from film watchers into filmmakers. Their films will then be seen by thousands of New Yorkers on our own TV show, Reel Works with Byron Hurt on NYCLife (Channel 25).

WHO WE ARE
We are 15 graduates of Reel Works who decided to give back by creating the Junior Advisory Board because Reel Works changed our lives – and hundreds more each year through their free after school and in-school programs. Please join us and help teens find their voice this summer.

ABOUT REEL WORKS
Founded in 2001, Reel Works is a nationally recognized nonprofit that partners with educators to transform the lives of over 200 NYC teens each year. We’re the only youth media program in the world that matches each student one-on-one with a professional filmmaker mentor. It’s a powerful combination that unlocks young talents, unleashes young voices and changes young lives.
