At Rooftop Films’ screening of The Dirties on June 1st, the film will follow a performance by Brooklyn based band Hani Zahra. In anticipation of the show, Rooftop Films had the opportunity to chat with the band.
Rooftop Films: How would you describe your own sound?
Hani Zahra: In regards to the album, the vast majority of descriptions we’ve heard reference Bowie mixed with modern sounds. I think it’s a fair description, though the live act has more of a raw feel.
RF: What’s your favorite track on your album?
HZ: Cannibal Crime. It’s more outwardly pop-y than the rest of the album, but it has a sinister undertone to the lyrics and that sticks with me. I’m also more likely to sing along with it than the other tracks.
RF: If you could play anywhere, where would it be?
HZ: It would be nice to head out west one day. Remembering shows out in the desert is kind of nostalgic for me. They were like endless summers.
RF: What do you like about Rooftop? About film in general?
HZ: Film can be an enlightening experience, and I find that to be most true while experiencing it with other people. Getting a bunch of like-minded people from the community to get up on a rooftop and watch indie films is just plain fun.
