SXSW Week of New York Premieres: Presented by AT&T

Rooftop Films 2013 Summer Series presented by AT&T is excited to announce a special weekend of select films from the 2013 South by Southwest Film Festival, making their New York premieres August 8-10 2013, as part of Rooftop Films 17th Annual Summer Series. Each of the films featured next week had their World Premiere or North American Premiere at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival.

The films being screened as a part of Rooftop Films Summer Series 2013 SXSW Week are Joe Swanberg’s Drinking Buddies, Lotfy Nathan’s dirt-bike documentary The 12 O’Clock Boys, Todd Sklar’s comedic tour de force Awful Nice, and Petra Costa’s poetic documentary Elena.

SXSW’s innovative programming has been an inspiration to Rooftop for years, and for this reason, Rooftop Films is proud to present a special weekend of SXSW World Premieres as a part of our ongoing mission to bring exciting and vital films to broad audiences across New York City and beyond.

SXSW Weekend Schedule:

On August 6th, Rooftop Films will be co-presenting Joe Swanberg’s Drinking Buddies—which also had its world premiere at SXSW–outdoors at Bam Cinematek. Drinking Buddies is available now on VOD and will be released in theaters by Magnolia Pictures on August 23rd. Swanberg will be present for a Q and A following the screening.

On Thursday, August 8, follow the life of thirteen-year-old Pug as he tries to become part of a notorious Baltimore dirt bike gang in Lotfy Nathan’s12 O’Clock Boys. This riveting and mesmerizing documentary makes its New York premiere with Rooftop Films in Williamsburg, courtesy of Oscilloscope Laboratories. The filmmaker will be present for a Q and A following the screening, along with subjects from the film.

Branson, Missouri comes to Brooklyn for the New York premiere of Awful Nice on Friday, August 9 in Sunset Park. Set in the “Las Vegas of the Midwest”, Sklar’s hilarious comedy follows two brothers who inherit their family lake home to fix up and sell. Branson-based band the Oakwood Boys take over as emcees and performers for the night. Awful Nice will be released in theaters in the spring of 2014 by Screen Media.

Rounding out the weekend, the intimate experimental documentary Elena makes its New York debut on Saturday, August 10. Petra Costa follows the traces of her long lost sister all the way to New York. Petra Costa will be in attendance for a Q&A afterwards.
